In this costume research I am going to be explaining how costume can be an important part to shaping up a character and how it can give someone an idea of what the plot is going to entail. I am also going to show pictures of things typically worn in the situations which our characters are going to be in.
For each of the characters we will need to closely consider their costume as this is one thing which can show someones personality (bright colours-loud personality), where they are going ( attending formal job interview or lounging around the house).
Firstly We have to consider costume design whether it is regular clothing or not each characters costume has an element of representation, which defines the character and allows you to deduce their personality and there habits from the way they appear. After all you will be judging there character based on their looks before they even come up with dialogue.
For our film we have a man named Olly Brown and a woman, Faith Williams both quite young being early 20’s applying for a job interview but the woman is late for this interview. So with that basic information we can come up with a costume plot for this character.
Faith has been described as being charismatic, well-presented young woman who isn't aware that this job opportunity is going to change her life. So with this you can deduce that she is proud in her appearance and has a sense of symmetry. The most significant characteristic is that she is unaware of the impact this job may have on her life.
This is a good example for a female characters costume in our movie, her outfit has an element of symmetry that would be expected in an interview, which gives a true professional impression and will compliment the personality of the character. However this film has two parallel versions of Faith one of faith being on time for her interview and the other is of her being late for the interview. Since the former has been already looked at, we will look at the latter. from the fact that she is late we can induce that she is going to be particularly messy with her appearance , however this is probably not going to be shown consistently because of her personality trait of being well presented, rather her appearing messy at the start and by the time she leaves her house she is tidy.
Olly does not have a much information on him but we can say that he may have similar traits to Faith, since they are going for the same job. So again a clean pressed suit may be appropriate or just a long sleeve shirt and a tie will suffice. On the train scene however he may be doing something else other than the job interview so casual clothes may be acceptable.
Now that the costumes have been discussed we can now gather these things together ready for when we start filming. I am now going to talk about plots in my next post as we need to be able to visualise the backgrounds and settings which will match our storyboard and props.
