The following is going to include me talking about the locations we need, ones which we have seen in existing films and the one which we have seen and are going to use for our short.
A vital part to a film would be where it is shot. This would therefore mean we need to look into the different locations where we could/are shooting. This can then be compared to existing media to show how it matches-up or doesn't. I am now going to show the different locations we will be using and what we are using each of them for.
In film, location is key. Location can change the atmosphere of a scene completely, for example, for our film, it would need to have a happy atmosphere when they meet at the train station, it would have to be open with nice looking streets to create the right atmosphere for a romance film, if it was a run-down neighbourhood with graffiti everywhere it wouldn’t create a happy feeling.
Our film is set in three different locations; the first location we will see is the inside of our female characters house, mainly her bedroom, her alarm clock would be the first thing we’d see, but it would turn into our establishing shot of her bedroom. The two pictures below are from existing media products that will look similar to our short film, one is from pretty woman (alarm clock) and the other is from p.s I love you.
This is the bedroom that we will be filming in. We’d also see other parts of the protagonists house for a short amount of time such as her kitchen and bathroom. The house is larger than you would expect for someone living on their own, this helps show that our protagonist is from a wealthy, higher class background. Therefore in conclusion, the house will represent wealth, but at the same time loneliness. The fact that she has a king-sized bed emphasised her loneliness as there is a lot of empty space behind her in the first few shots.
Our next location would be where our character is rushing to the train station to get to her interview on time. Below is a piece of existing media that will look similar to our location, it is a shot from the film The Tourist and next to it is our location.
This will be an important location because it will be where our characters will meet for the first time. We are going to be using a local train station to film this meeting. Here is a picture of the location. the representations of the train station are that the local area is very linked to other larger, main towns, showing it has very good transport links for our characters to commute.
Our final location will be the office, for her interview, this is also an important location because it is where our character will meet in the second outcome. The picture below is from an existing piece of media, a film called, the pursuit of happiness, We will be staging this interview at the school as there is a particular corridor with offices running all through it which is perfectly suited to the scene where they both meet for a second time.
The office along with the characters clothes shows that they are both going to a formal interview and that the job they are applying for is very much professional.
Now that we have done our location research we can go on to making sure that all of the places are available so that we can do some test shots and also film the shots which will be exhibited in our final production. We now need to think about, and discuss what props we need and how they are being used.
